Immunotherapy & checkpoint inhibitors

Drugs that unmask cancer cells so the immune system can destroy them have transformed melanoma, lung cancer, and more — producing durable remissions in some patients with advanced disease, something almost unheard of two decades ago.

CAR T-cell therapy

A patient's own immune T-cells are collected, engineered in a lab to recognize their cancer, and returned as a living drug. Approved for several blood cancers, with response rates that stunned even researchers.

Precision oncology

How cancer research gets funded

Behind every new treatment is a funding chain that typically spans decades:

  • Government funding — in the U.S., the National Cancer Institute (part of the NIH) is the world's largest funder of cancer research, supporting basic science, clinical trials, and cancer centers nationwide.
  • Nonprofit and philanthropic funding — organizations like the American Cancer Society, Stand Up To Cancer, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and disease-specific foundations fund early-stage and high-risk research that might not otherwise happen.
  • Industry funding — pharmaceutical and biotech companies fund the large, late-stage clinical trials required to bring a drug to approval.
  • You — charitable donations, community fundraisers, and, most powerfully, clinical trial participation. Every approved cancer drug exists because patients volunteered for trials.

Should you consider a clinical trial?

Clinical trials aren't a last resort — they're often how patients access tomorrow's treatment today, with close monitoring by expert teams. Participants always receive at least the current standard of care. Good questions to ask your oncologist: Is there a trial that fits my cancer and stage? What would it involve? What are the possible benefits and risks for me specifically?

A hopeful bottom line: cancer death rates have declined steadily for decades, and there are millions of cancer survivors alive today. Research works — and it is accelerating.
